This opinion is a big deal. Justice Kagan has done something fairly significant for voting rights plaintiffs. See my post in progress

How J Kagan got Justice Thomas to sign onto this opinion is a mystery: it seems to greatly expand ability to attack Republican gerrymanders

I've now completed my analysis of today's NC racial gerrymandering decision by #SCOTUS. Seems like a really big deal http://electionlawblog.org/?p=92675

What a winning streak by @marceelias, who went head to head w Paul Clement in NC and VA voting case on same day at #SCOTUS and won both!

I think Thomas's loyalty to conservatism might have been trumped by a reaction to some pretty blatant racial profiling.

Frankly, if it were me, I'd find that political gerrymandering is also unconstitutional as a violation of fundamental voting rights.

Maybe the overt racism of Trump, Sessions and so many of their rabid white supremacist supporters has *finally* opened Thomas' eyes.

Because he wasn't on SCOTUS when it was argued. So he doesn't get to vote on it.

@quartzen His own coda suggests he was upset by District 12 the *last* time he saw it. She likely didn't have to shove hard.

I know why. In the VA case Thomas rejected the idea that complying with Section 5 of the VRA was a compelling interest anymore.
