Yes, that's the critical difference between the Special Counsel & Independent Counsel under the 1978 Act. No legal obstacle; just politics.

I thought 600.7(d) made him removable only by AG? Does Prez have inherent authority to remove a Special Counsel? https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/28/600.7 …pic.twitter.com/UJ2CQWgc49

No, regs are clear there. prez can't remove. only AG.
-
Regs cannot alter inherent Constitutional powers, though.
-
Special prosecutor addressed in constitution?
-
I'm not aware of an inherent presidential power to fire non-appointees.
-
Even if we take that as a given, he could alter the scope of the SC's duties by withdrawing or amending the relevant regulations.
-
Have to tell you, not real worried about that right now from a man who can't string two coherent sentences together.

No, he can't fire the special prosecutor. Only the AG can. But since AG is recused....?????
-
Rosenstein's memo referred to himself as Acting AG, so I assume that's how the reporting line would go.

If he does that, he'll be a private citizen by Saturday.

You are right, although we can hope that at some point the political cost for repeatedly blocking investigation will become too great.
