1/ Thomas can give Trump, who he likely aligns with more than any other R president, a chance to name his replacement

2/ It will give him a chance to make money for his family and go on the Tea Party/speaking circuit, where he would be a hero

3/ It is the best chance for him to get a replacement closest to his philosophy

4/ It is not as though he has gained a lot of other adherents to his particular brand of originalism, and so not much lost to his legacy
