In case you are too young or don't remember the details: I recount the story of Florida 2000, in all of its partisanship, machine breakdown, incompetent glory, in chapter 1 of #TheVotingWarshttps://www.amazon.com/Voting-Wars-Florida-Election-Meltdown-ebook/dp/B008MXQCPY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1541735594&sr=8-1&keywords=richard+l.+hasen+voting+wars …

In 2000,Florida Republicans who were ahead tried to stop a recount (and they had some good reasons to worry about how that recount was being conducted). In 2018, are Florida Republicans who were ahead trying to stop the initial COUNTING of ballots? That's a BIG difference.

Two things can be true at the same time: Broward county is incompetent in counting votes and there is no evidence of intentional fraud. Rick Scott had 8 years to improve Florida’s system of election administration.

I see @MarcACaputo reported back in May that Scott had ordered state election officials to monitor Broward elections. Did that happen and if so what does the monitor say? https://www.politico.com/states/florida/story/2018/05/14/florida-to-monitor-broward-election-chief-after-judge-finds-unlawful-ballot-destruction-in-wasserman-schultz-race-415832 …

As a reader points out, Scott had the ability to remove Broward's elections officer before the election and chose not to.

"No evidence of voter fraud" is the result of every GOP claim of voter fraud for decades. It sure gets the base riled up though.

and generally speaking, he did the exact opposite of “improve.” Anything modestly good he did do was the result of litigation, court orders, and massive PR headaches like arbitrarily removing WWII vets from the voter rolls

What do you consider the refusal to disclose the number of outstanding ballots? At the very least, it gives the appearance of impropriety.

Wouldn’t taking time to figure out how many ballots are outstanding reduce the amount of time devoted to actually *counting* the votes? But then, maybe that’s the point of Scott’s “emergency” FOIA request. FL’s Sec of State *does* have a vote certification deadline to meet.

As painful as I find all of this as a Broward County resident, you are absolutely correct and I feel the same way. What a disgrace, and the rhetoric just flames the divisiveness.

Lived in Broward for nearly 9 yrs but never saw anything like this. Isn’t the election supervisor elected? How on earth did she keep getting re-elected? And that ballot is a mess. I can see many of the elderly missing the Senate vote given where they put it. I’m truly sad.
