this is a somewhat different context where there is a factual issue in dispute that could be dispositive to how senators vote.
-
In theory, but that's not how this town works these days.
-
Even if true in general, that does not absolve individual senators of a moral responsibility to the truth. I’m not suggesting you’re justifying it here, but it’s easy to move from “that’s how things work” to “that’s how I’ll act.” And that’s just nihilism.
-
I'm am not defending any Senator's behavior.
-
I know. That’s why I was careful to say I didn’t read you to be offering a justification. My worry is that cynicism breeds excuse and ultimately nihilism.
-
But I agree with you! It’s a problem…
-
As is the nihilist temptation in such situations. I find it all very depressing.

Dems pressing Kavanaugh to "Say YOU want an FBI investigation" wasn't a great strategy for getting at the truth, even as a bank-shot. And as John Dickerson said, it wasn't a good presentation-to-the-public strategy, either.

Seems like ole' Mark Judge is about to be in a fine position to be able to blackmail himself a Supreme Court Judge. Maybe he won't have a motive to do so, but I wonder who might be able to leverage Judge to use it.
