“There is no collision” better than “I am not a crook.” But, if there is evidence, Mueller and Congressional Dems won’t call it collusion (will instead be conspiracy”). Better to defend on facts (for example, getting opposition research from Russians not unlawful).

Getting opposition research from Russians that otherwise would have constituted an in-kind campaign contribution is indeed illegal, as
@rickhasen explained last year. https://amp.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/jurisprudence/2017/07/donald_trump_jr_s_free_speech_defense_is_as_bogus_as_it_sounds.html …1 reply 5 retweets 11 likes -

I know the argument. It’s a huge reach, and I’d be surprised if Mueller would prosecute it if that’s all there is. Steele got opposition research on
@realDonaldTrump from Russians and passed it to an agent for the Clinton campaign and DNC. Illegal conduct by HRC and DNC too?3 replies 0 retweets 0 likes -
It would have been an in-kind contribution for Russians to talk to Steele only if it would have been an in-kind contribution for Americans to do the same. I doubt anyone has ever considered talking to an opposition researcher to be an in-kind contribution.

Yeah. So lawful for Russians to give oppo to Clinton campaign agent (Steele) but unlawful for Russian to give oppo to Trump campaign agent? Why? What’s the difference?

If the idea was that the Russians would pass to Don Jr some dirt they heard about Clinton, then I see no campaign finance violation. If the meeting was intended to cover more, e.g. obtaining Clinton's missing emails, then it looks very different.
