Honestly, I have a hard time taking the idea of a "Designer" as a whole job seriously. Like you lay out buttons and text? That's it?

But think of all of the opportunities for bikeshedding on things that don't really matter. Omg so many fonts to argue about.

I can do lots of things with CSS and many advanced elements with Material or Ant Design. But whenever I try to do a whole web page, it looks as shit (but functional one). It's not about a single element, but overall aesthetics, style, feeling, etc.

I've never met a designer who only "lays out buttons and text," but I suspect even the activity you're conceiving of here involves more than the superficial verbs in the sentence. Do you follow any "designers" on Twitter?

Take a few app contracts and you'll realize that the potential for design creep is so large that it becomes a professional liability to agree to own the design responsibility. Designers are great insurance for engineers against unpaid time theft by indecisive clients.

Any field can be described in reductionist terms. Programmers just edit text files (which don't even have different fonts!). Surgeons just cut holes in people and then close the holes back up. Professors just say the same thing to a new batch of people every year.

The key thing that designers do is get a brain to understand abstract concepts (the app's internal state and what actions can be performed) in a language that the human visual cortex understands. Imagine writing a math textbook without any words. That's design.

Designers can optimize user interactions. Possibly one of the biggest costs in software.

What does directors do anyway, telling bunch of people what to do and scheduling meetings? Is that even a job?

They are also the guardian of the temple when it comes to the graphical identity of the interfaces, they optimise it for its users. A very real example of that is people who put the 200+ countries list in a dropdown with no search field. Or even worse stuff…
