All fair. But you have to admit that regardless of whether he said "Linux is a cancer" or "GPL is a cancer" the end result is an extremely off putting statement towards those in that space. But yes, it has been 17 years and the mindset has changed a lot.

Linus has said probably 100,000 sexist and abusive things since this _one_ statement. I think focusing on one misplaced statement for decades is unhealthy but it suits peoples hate.

True, although I wouldn't want to work in a company that uses the moral guidance of "but others are worse" :-)

Right! but be consistent with your morales lines in the sand.

That's fair. Although I think one can be against how Linus' treats people and conclude that Ballmer's statement was off putting. While I work for Microsoft, I don't think of myself as Team A and non-Microsoft folks as Team B. It's not an either or.

Agree with both of you :) I think there has been and is more than enough ass-hattery to last us all a lifetime. In the future, I am hoping we'll at least try to be nicer to one another.

How's secure boot signing going? Can I buy a Linux laptop from an OEM at the neighborhood computer store yet?

Well, I think. Ubuntu, Fedora, *SUSE, etc. all seem to handle SB-enabled machines these days. Whether you can buy a Linux laptop from a neighborhood store is an orthogonal question, but Dell, System76 and others offer several highly regarded models https://system76.com/laptops

Alternatively, if your need for Linux is less frequent, and/or you also need to run Windows apps/tools, then you could also run Ubuntu, Debian, openSUSE, SLES, and others on Windows' Subsystem for Linux (WSL), or in VM's on Hyper-V if you prefer.

Thanks. My next laptop will be an ARM without a battery-eating backdoor coprocessor. When I worked in aerospace via IBM the security guidelines forbade doing anything mission critical on Windows, but nobody was able to procure any Linux hardware because of SB, they said

Oh, and the can't procure Linux HW due to SB is nonsense. We build Shim and the Linux Foundation and most of the distros had solutions in place well before SB became de-facto on laptops.

This was late 2015, IBM had only one internal source of Linux laptops, in Mexico, who claimed they couldn't ship anything because of SB issues, and about a dozen bulletins saying not to use Windows because of open security issues, some of which were being monitored in the wild.
