    I’m stunned by the stupidity of people who talk about Ukraine without mentioning NATO expansion. How are you talking about a geopolitical event while leaving out the geopolitics? Russia has been warning the West that NATO expansion is a red line long before anyone heard of Putin.

    That’s correct. The US removed its Jupiter nuclear missiles from Turkey after the Soviets removed theirs from Cuba. (But the Americans waited to do it so that it wouldn’t look like they were appeasing the Russians). Both sides understood the balance of power must be respected.

    Oh, but even in cuban missile crises we miss that the Russian put the nukes or wanted to because we had some in Turkey.

    That doesn’t mean you have to agree or like Russia. It means you understand Russia is a power and has areas it considers too important; where it feels that its existence is being threatened. The US would— and did— react similarly in its own backyard during Cuban missile crisis.
