@BrandonBloom … so using helper functions can dramatically improve performance

@timbaldridge If the helper functions need to send/recv, they incur overhead for 1 more state machine, right? Pull out only non-comm code?

@BrandonBloom any control flow incurs a state transition penalty, so ifs, condp, loops, etc.

@timbaldridge Most of fipp's control flow guards sends. Can't lift them out without another go block.

@BrandonBloom It might be worth testing, I'm not sure if it'll be faster or not, I'm still researching the best approach.

@timbaldridge I only ported Fipp b/c Rich asked if I had considered it (I hadn't). Turned out nice, but slower. Successful experiment: done!

@BrandonBloom agreed, and to be honest, I'm super happy with a 20% slowdown.

@timbaldridge Oh yeah, really quite good! Fipp only needs generators, and even then only a subset of their control behavior; so no worries!

@BrandonBloom @timbaldridge did you try using 'thread' and the real blocking primitives, instead of go?

@richhickey @timbaldridge Earlier this morning. It was slower, but I didn't write down by how much. Might change for much larger prints.

@BrandonBloom @timbaldridge if slower pre-buffering, might be faster post, if ioc is 20% slower. Real threads can be 2x faster than ioc atm

@richhickey @timbaldridge D'oh! Thought I tried with both buffering & real threads. Ever so slightly beats the reducers version now! Awesome

@richhickey @timbaldridge Does this make me the first person to have ever written a multi-threaded pretty printer? :-)

@richhickey @timbaldridge Tuning buffer sizes seems to have big impact, but my initial guess of *width* seems best. Not sure how to optimize
