Hey now, we’re still making good use of them for drawing Web pages (which are just a lot of shaded axis aligned rectangles) :)

Oh, please don't take it the wrong way, I was really thinking of real-time 3D games where rasterization was formerly king. I imagine there will always be interesting uses for rasterization.

they won't be after polygonal geometry aka "shell graphics" dies though... good news is that texture compression experience should be pretty applicable to ordered sampled data in 3D too, right?

I suspect by the time GPU textures become obsolete (from a business perspective) I'll be old enough that I won't want to work on texture compression anymore.

I would contend that the coherent lookups HW texture compression heavily relies on are not so easily guaranteed in RT.
