...almost no patterns. It’s actually astonishing to me how diverse corps are. Activision and EA, to speak of the biggest ones, are almost completely opposite. Yet I love both and both do great stuff

And within Atvi the various studios-by design- are more different than they are alike. I know Rich has the best intentions but that post paints a picture that I don’t recognize and I think is bad for ppl who don’t know how the industry is

There are good companies out there. Part of the motivation for writing this was to help younger developers avoid the bad companies and go to the good ones.

Sure, but how does it help? It covers basically all categories with negative attributes, plus in my experience there is so much variance within a given category (at least of the ones I've experienced) that talking of it as a whole is just not possible.

I imagine his issue is that there are no good patterns listed. Although it may be aimed at helping people avoid bad companies it could also easily be seen as "everything is shit, just stay away from tech"

“Just stay away from tech” is the conclusion a lot of the people I know have come to. The field in general is really bad. Especially from the outside. Once you’re inside and being highly paid to basically keep your eyes closed it’s not so bad, I guess.

Sure, but starting a post as "This can be helpful to think about" and then everything to follow is "this is crap" or "this can be good, but it never ever lasts" isn't actually helpful IMO.

Now... what I could see helpful is recognizing that there are different types of companies that can fit different personalities better. Then recognizing various traps each type of company can fall into and helping people avoid those.

When you join a tech firm you need to quickly figure out what makes it tick, or your job or career is at risk. That’s my basic message. It’s “corporate worker 101” type stuff. I don’t work for any corporation so I’m not afraid to point this basic stuff out.
