At least for me, I was thinking about the people you work with. My coworkers at one firm would tend to devalue whatever you were working on (either at home or at work) in order to reduce the amount of competition for bonuses.

Sometimes you have to ignore that feeling that your passion should be marketable. I find that difficult to do because I love writing software... but that's also what I get paid to do... so I always have this nagging feeling that what I do should be a part of my "portfolio".

I've gotten more into playing with Max, etc., because that I can play and be creating with coding, without feeling like I need to "show off" my work/source code/whatever.
