I have doubts about ASTC supplanting BC7 on desktop, long term. It’s lower quality for LDR content and *significantly* more complex.
Also to implement ASTC efficiently in hardware is even more expensive than I thought.

It’s a standard there, and most mobile never had bc7/bc6h.

Only Intel supports textureCompressionASTC_LDR in desktop. Neither AMD or Nvidia desktop GPUs support it. Not worth supporting. All desktop GPUs (since 2009) support BC1-7, because that's a requirement for DX11.0. BC6H and BC7 are comparable to ASTC, but much simpler.
