UGH. I've had my name dropped from credits where I wrote a Playstation emulator that a couple coders spent a few weeks shipping a game with. I gutted Unreal @ Ubisoft and built Splinter Cell's renderer from the ground-up and got just "additional coding" Happy for that at least :/pic.twitter.com/U1HqCS75YW

Punishing with credits is one of many game development cancers. Was the studio’s Technical Architect at SMS, worked on GoW for almost 3 years rewriting majority of the renderer, put long hours (especially for the E3) and the result? “Additional programming” and not even game code.

A brilliant way to make ex-colleagues feel like shit during the game release, especially seeing critical acclaim and all the celebrations. It's like those 3 years taken out of your life (almost) didn't matter.

Its particularly frustrating when some people may join the team 3 months before shipping and get full credit. But I guess that's the rules of the game.

Many places are decent and generous. So those are not some general rules, just deliberate choice of the management (and a way to maintain toxic crunch culture by "blackmail"). We are senior developers and we don't care, but imagine how scary it is to a junior artist or animator..

"Toxic crunch culture" - That's exactly what it is. It starts with "junior" developers, who either have no choice or just think it's normal and something they have to do.

I think whenever you have an industry that young folks are desperate to get into, it's almost inevitable that abusive business plans will grow up around an exploitable and disorganised workforce. Shaming is one of the few fixes we know. Keep it up.
