As far as I can tell, ASTC doesn’t use BC7-style pbits. Instead it has various new tricks for encoding endpoint colors. pbits (where endpoint components share the same LSB) are quite effective if used correctly.

It’s still early but my gut feeling so far is that ASTC is flawed/unbalanced. From experience with BC7, 3+ subsets aren’t necessary, and not all partition patterns are made equal. ASTC throws the kitchen sink at the problem and hopes for the best.

This is an example of a useless partitioning pattern. It will rarely if ever be beneficial to use this sucker on real-life data.

I'm guessing from looking at ASTC that encoders just try a whole bunch of stuff and find something that sorta kinda works well enough. While with BC7 you can be smart about which partitions you try, which modes to use or focus on, etc.
