A PayPal founder was a friend of mine. He was an ex game developer. He said emphatically to me: “Get out of games - you’ll never make much there”. Looking back, he was right.

I’m sure working on B2B database software or for a bank would be more lucrative, but I’m sure plenty of game devs would view that as very unrewarding

Perhaps. But if you have kids that depend on your income and live in an expensive area (where most if the game jobs are) the “rewards” of professional gamedev matter little.

No arguing here... look at how many older experienced devs are now at oculus/google/nvidia... just pointing out that pursuit of money doesn’t motivate many creative devs.

What are the rewards of game development? It's an industry that's totally normalized crunching, it's full of very unstable companies that go bust at the drop of a hat, and full of abusive publishers. I'm telling every young programmer I can: Avoid the game industry.
