The Cult of Torvalds has finally cracked: https://www.newyorker.com/science/elements/after-years-of-abusive-e-mails-the-creator-of-linux-steps-aside … This was inevitable, and I've been expecting it. You can't be this unprofessional and expect nothing to happen. It doesn't matter who you are, how much money you have, etc. - there are minimum standards of conduct.

IMO Linus is what happens when a personality trait like Ramsay's interacts with his colleagues through a computer instead of face to face. That's all.

Do you think the "reality TV effect" is in play? Ie part of the cruelty and drama is played up for the purposes of entertaining an audience rather than anything to do with communication. I do this periodically myself, though at least I'm usually aware of it.

This is has a complex answer. There's theories about this. That we may behave different the moment we know a camera is on. & If it makes money, it gets encouraged. Likewise, Linus is aware his email lists are public and if that behavior gets his points across, it gets reinforced.

What is actually happening here, is anyone's guess.
