The Cult of Torvalds has finally cracked: https://www.newyorker.com/science/elements/after-years-of-abusive-e-mails-the-creator-of-linux-steps-aside … This was inevitable, and I've been expecting it. You can't be this unprofessional and expect nothing to happen. It doesn't matter who you are, how much money you have, etc. - there are minimum standards of conduct.

I would bet that the corporations which fund and develop Linux (and pay this guy's paycheck) finally had enough. Nobody flipflops 180 degrees like this in public unless they were given the riot act by the ones who hold the purse strings.

I hope Linux will return to do that job and do it without insulting people. He wrote he'll get "assistance" and wants to "fix my own behavior" so I guess there's a good chance that this will actually happen?

I don't believe he was saying Linus' *methods* were good, or in any way necessary, but that the dude was otherwise a solid maintainer of software, which is an exceedingly rare skill. Especially at the size and scope of Linux. The question is whether somebody will fill his role.
-
Yep, this basically. I'm not a fan of the rude posts, but I didn't find them terribly bad either (better a straightforward personal insult than sleazy 'corporate-style' scheming and backstabbing). I guess this is also a generational/regional divide.

In your heart of hearts, can you look at some of the Khronos group standards for, say, OpenGL or COLLADA and not say "Maybe somebody should've been called a moron for proposing this"? There I think is a time and a place yet for sharp, stinging feedback.
-
You can still have sharp feedback about an idea without insulting the person behind the idea. This also isn't just about Linus as there are tons of wannabe Linus's that are out there who think being a good software engineer means berating anyone around then who makes a mistake.
-
that's a separate problem: cult of personality. and that's where Silicon Valley is the North Korea of the western world unfortunately (see the Jobs and Musk worshipping)
-
Bingo. Also, realtalk: assholes (and awesome people!) come and go, but cruft is forever. I'm pretty sure that everybody involved in CORBA, MUMPS, and Enterprise Java Beans stayed away from personal insults in official communication--and yet, they've done billions in damage.

Also, think about all the good ideas he might have killed just by being a jerk. All the ideas that were never brought up out of fear or being assaulted and abused. All the people who never contributed for the same reasons. Maybe Linux will even be better without him.
