Anyhow, I’ve given a brain dump of a lot of the things I remember while working for a so-called self-organizing company. IMO, once you throw bonuses in they become utterly toxic workplaces.

Interesting thread Rich. I thing bonuses can work well if weighted more heavily towards "team performance" than individual, if measured well. This does have the possible positive/negative effect of creating competition between teams but is a better balance from what I've seen.
-
I don't think anyone's figured out how to run a bonus-centric tech firm really well yet. Bonuses can introduce very strange/extreme distortions. If you reward the more profitable teams, everyone's going to gravitate to those teams and ignore the less immediately profitable ones.
-
Once you incentivize engineers with bonuses they will turn their optimization abilities into how to get ahead. The company's goals, coworker relationships, code quality, maintainability, etc. all take back seat. They will singularly focus on the highest number possible.

I want to echo this that as an external dev working with a self-organizing company it was mostly great. Simply because there was almost no bureaucracy exposed to me. I know for a fact that there was a ton of bureaucracy internally, but I just did my job and got paid easily.
-
I will echo this too.
-
Yup. As an external dev, it's really nice.

My only experience has been trying to get a fix for a SteamVR bug affecting our product as well as some others like UE4, failing, giving up, writing a workaround. Last time I checked the bug was still there and workaround - necessary.
-
What's the issue with UE4/SteamVR?
-
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/openvr/issues/428 … SteamVR launches if you open UE4 even if you don’t have Vive plugged in. The issue is closed but it’s not fixed (and I can’t reopen it). We use USB discovery workaround mentioned in the comments.
-
Well, if you figure out how to make these folks a nice bonus when they fix this bug, you're golden.

It seems like it would make an outrageously obvious amount of sense to roll up all of the bonuses and spread em equally in everyone's base pay... but perhaps I'm too naive to believe that such a thing could happen
-
I’ve been told by insiders at one SO company that the bonus encentive there has been reduced (or eliminated? it wasn’t clear). So they’ve figure out that it was a serious problem.
-
I've also heard something about the incentive being greatly reduced. IMO if you gotta have bonuses, they should be team / "cabal"-based, not purely individualistic.

Trust me: you don't want to work in a workplace where there are no bonus nor malus.
