It's a general point about "sucking data through a straw" really. API designers are forced to do it because the alternative is sharing mutable data or allocation. Only mentioned Netty because it's popular enough that I know about ByteProcessor and most readers would too.

Actually sounds like a great contrib to Apache Commons. Sadly you need to try replacing the vector API usage with a strong faith to JVM auto-vectorization.
