2019-nCoV: International agencies and actors—please listen to voices of the citizens, not only the government, of China. Here is one, received today: “We are so so so scared and desperate.” If a PHEIC means anything it must surely mean responding to the needs of the people. Now.

Now watch this video again after reading this background article : A long read but worth it. Thanks to for sharing it. Truly, heartbreaking to see putting millions of people at risk, without prompt and timely action.

Ensure that evidence based action on movement restriction is agreed so that member states can take consistent decisions around travel restriction, borders etc - countries are already taking very varied measures.

Perhaps Tedros should have read this article before giving his judgement about China’s response to 2019-nCoV. I know I should have.

Focus on case finding and isolation. Identify and monitor contacts. Do not take non-evidence-based actions that will exacerbate social, economic tolls of this epidemic. Large-scale quarantines, closing borders, trade restrictions likely to cause more harm than good.

There are many priorities, but one of them is to accelerate a , especially with new info on the nCoV Ro and rapid spread. And not exploit this situation to push unproven biotechnologies, but to accelerate actual safe and effective vaccines.

Let’s assume the IHR Emergency Committee declares a PHEIC today (they surely must). What should be the consequences? Head of State attention and more resources. But what else? What “temporary recommendations” should DG WHO make? Please offer suggestions.

Some experts say 2019-nCoV will peak in 10 days. Others argue the peak may be much later. This extreme uncertainty should encourage WHO to consider establishing a technical advisory group to gather/synthesise evidence on likely outbreak scenarios.

The latest clinical report on 2019-nCoV: 99 patients from Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital. Important: a key group of patients progress rapidly to ARDS, septic shock, and multiple organ failure. 23% ITU admission, 17% ARDS, 11% mortality.

New study shows that 2019-nCoV is “sufficiently divergent” to be a new human-infecting betacoronavirus. Bats are confirmed as the likely host reservoir. There needs to be constant surveillance for mutations.

From direct contacts with Chinese physicians treating patients with 2019-nCoV on the frontlines of care, we know they have been extremely challenged and are exhausted. All Chinese health workers dealing with this outbreak deserve the world’s thanks, support, and solidarity.
