The scale of this is just overwhelming. In Antep, as rescue workers search for survivors in one building, another collapses.

Massive earthquake in Turkey is in an area that has become far more populated in recent years, especially with Syrian refugees. Many living in fragile structures. A vulnerable area with vulnerable people hit very hard. Death toll rising quickly.

He was dedicated, brave, funny, charismatic and caring. A true humanitarian. A loss for all who knew him and the many he helped.

Yesterday, GRM founder Pete Reed was killed in Bakhmut, Ukraine. Pete was the bedrock of GRM, serving as Board President for 4 years. In January, Pete stepped away from GRM to work with Global Outreach Doctors on their Ukraine mission and was killed while rendering aid. #Ukraine

Fortunately, that never happened to me while I was captain of a destroyer. We did fire a couple of rounds at the moon once, but that is a longer story....

Since "Chinese Spy Balloon" is trending: In 1945, the crew of USS New York spotted a sphere that they thought might be a Japanese balloon weapon. The captain ordered it shot down but none of the guns could score a hit. Finally, a navigator realized they were attacking Venus.

A person directly familiar with the matter tells on Chinese spy balloon. “we do it to them” with satellites and drones.  And many of the “unidentified aerial phenomena” sightings are believed to be Chinese aircraft. And China spies on US daily in far more damaging ways.

A US military official ive know for a long time dismissed the Chinese balloon threat. “What are they looking at over Montana? Cattle? What about the phones in everyone’s pocket or tiktok? They give away far more information.”Seems more like psyop than real surveillance threat.

US accuses Russia of endangering nuclear arms control treaty. key line: It follows months of more hopeful assessments the two countries would be able to salvage cooperation on limiting strategic nuclear weapons despite tensions over Russia’s war on Ukraine

From abroad, the mass shootings in the US seem like a preventable illness. Two friends in the UK independently told me “if Americans don’t want to fix the problem, I can’t feel sorry for them.” It gave me pause.

In historic address President Zelenskyy says all Ukrainians share the same Christmas wish; victory, only victory, and they will celebrate it even without electricity, illuminated by their own confidence.

There had been thoughts, questions that Biden would pressure Zelenskyy to make a (potentially bad) deal with Russia to end the war at any price. It didn’t happen, at least not in public. Instead unreserved US support to help Zelenskyy on battlefield.

Biden says his goal isn’t diplomacy for diplomacy’s sake, but helping Ukraine win on the battlefield so Ukraine can negotiate from strength. (Biden’s strongest point so far)

Most revealing comment today was question by Ukrainian TV journalist. He started his question thanking the US saying his family wouldn’t be alive without US support. That’s how many Ukrainians feel. That without American support their lives would be over, war crimes their fate.

It’s a sign of strength that President Zelenskyy traveled to DC. A sign of confidence that he can travel abroad without fear his country is about to be overrun by Russia.

Historic meeting between presidents Biden and Zelenskyy. 300 days ago the US and others were encouraging Zelenskyy to leave bec he had little chance of surviving the Russian invasion. Now Zelenskyy in DC receiving support/ weapons and delivering a message to the American people.

Zelenskyy in DC via telegram: “I am in Washington today to thank the American people, the President and the Congress for their much-needed support. And also to continue cooperation to bring our victory closer.”

Widens the scope far beyond Ukraine and sets up a military alliance that could outlive the conflict. Russia is providing 'unprecedented' military support to Iran in exchange for drones, officials say.

According to a senior administration official, WNBA star Brittney Griner is free after 294 days in Russian captivity – the last month spent in one of Russia’s notoriously harsh penal colonies. She was traded for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

We interviewed a woman in Kherson who has a son with cerebral palsy.  He finds comfort in the water, the weightlessness of the bath.  Water does miracles for the disabled. Russian attacks mean no power, no hot water, no comfort for the boy and anguish for his mother.

Back in Ukraine.  It’s bitterly cold.  It’s the elderly, young and frail who suffer the most when Russia attacks the power grid.  Using the cold as a weapon is NOT indiscriminate.

A western intelligence official tells me: Bakhmut is Wagner advertising. Prigozhin using it to secure contracts and takeover St. Petersburg politics.  called it a “a bloody, pointless battle.” Sounds about right.
