I covered 17 U.S.Opens for Sports Illustrated. This is just my opinion: There is no way a men’s player with Serena resume (multiple GS titles, economic driver of the sport) is getting a third code violation for that language in the finals of a major. No way.

Fourth round. Australian Open. And get the transcript of what McEnroe said too. Come on now.

can't cherry pick - not allowed. Fact is McEnroe got blown up for his behavior - and that's really the crux of the issue, isn't it?

In sports, what happens if you mouth off to a referee? You get penalized. Same thing in life. Try running your mouth off to a cop, no rewards there. This bad behavior needs to stop - breaking your racket.. aww poor baby.

She was given a code violation for calling the umpire a thief. The McEnroe incident shared showed him actually being verbally abusive. Not comparable. The line obviously has to be drawn somewhere. Point is that line was pretty weak today. This isn't that difficult to understand.

she called him a thief more than once, he let it slide. I think it was the fact she was persistantly abusive towards him that finally got him to give her the penalty. What was he supposed to do, just let her carry on after already doing it during two change of ends?

That we're actually calling this abusive is laughable, I honestly think

James Blake is one of my top 5 all-time favorite tennis players, and it all started after an infamous but slightly obscure match against Lleyton Hewitt 17 years ago. Don't think Hewitt received a code violation for what happened there. (Bet James remembers that "moment" well.)

The post-game press conference was surreal, and if I remember correctly, occurred deep into the night. Trying to imagine the reaction on social media if that happened today.

There is no way "he" is constantly barking at the umpire for 15-min. Name a male pro with that resume that would lose it like that.

Can’t see fed or nadal doing it. And still not my point. They would not get the third code in the final. Just my opinion.

May I ask what her past wins or money she brings in has to do with it. The only thing that matters is the events on court. The moment you consider irrelevant factors fairness goes out the window. It was unacceptable behaviour & language. No player can be allowed to act like it.

So, you are saying that all USTA refs are sexist and just waiting to hand out violations to female athletes? You are a journalist -how does that make you qualified to make this judgment call?

No, I'm saying this guy would not have coded Federer or Nadal in a major final as they are Serenas equal. And I said it was my opinion. Anything else you'd like to discuss, or is there some other thing I didn't tweet you want to tag me with?

Fed and Nadal haven’t and would never continue verbal abuse of the official. They’d have dropped it and moved on to the match at hand. Serena has a record of belittling officials.
