. & correctly highlight that RCP8.5 *emissions* are not "business-as-usual" BUT it's important to note that in Earth System models, the RCP8.5 CO2 *concentration pathway* can still arise from a lower emissions scenario (eg. SRES A1B) if feedbacks are strong

With January 2020 coming in as the warmest on record, there is a real chance that 2020 might give 2016 as run for its money as the overall warmest year on record in the ERA5 dataset, despite expected neutral El Nino conditions:

It’s World Wetlands Day, and I’m in the Cuvette Centrale, in the center of the Congo Basin, the world’s second largest tropical wetland, and since 2017 known as home to the world’s largest tropical peatland complex. Here on fieldwork to learn more about the peatlands.

For an environmental activist, you sure do seem to like attacking climate scientists. Where do you think your information about climate risks come from? Why do you think we work long hours researching, talking to public & policymakers, teaching, those risks? Pathetic to blame us.

Sorry to see this happen, hoping that highly-skilled and international scientists will continue to work in the UK and access to funding and networks supporting collaboration with scientists from around the world continues

shouldn't one add that even a given concentration pathway can lead to many different outcomes, depending on sensitivity & tipping processes e.g. in ice cover?

Feeling very sad today. I can't help thinking about my British colleagues, the many European projects we've done together over the years, and the British students I've had in class thanks to the Erasmus programme. I hope we'll find a way to make this continue, somehow.

If you're unclear about the important distinction between emissions (of CO2 and other GHGs by humans) and concentration (of same in the atmosphere), then this is the thread for you.
