What about private trust networks that emanate from verified identity. I think that will happen way before public protocols are ready for consumers. Airbnb host=> guests => recommendations => referral awards/discounts. Uber=> local riders=> referrals.

Can you expand on that? How would a private trust network function without the public verification part?

I'd argue that those products gained traction and sustained by offering ease of use and reliability. Trust and private/public ownership of data are esoteric concepts for most consumers. If they can "trust" that a product solves their "need" easily and reliably, they'll use it.

I've been toying with the idea of a social identity that is essentially a web of trust, public but also private — you get to choose what's available through an application or visible to the world.

Kinda like keybase's identities, but decentralized and with all the tech stuff hidden.
