Is there a mathematics of discontinuous behaviour? (1925) Christopher Zeeman was one of the strongest advocates of "Catastrophe Theory", nowadays used in the study of tipping points. Here's his beautiful 1976 paper in Scientific American

14 years ago I published my first scientific article co-authored by Today, I have published my article number 60 also in collaboration with my PhD supervisor. Thousand thanks Ricard !! For those days of wine and chaos !

ICYMI: Five years ago, researchers used GWAS to show evidence for natural selection acting on certain traits. Now, those results, and the methods that produced them, are being called into question.

After reading about this grandiose "Biogenome Project" that promises saving biodiversity by sequencing genomes and "using A.I.", I find very little substance & a lot of reductionistic thinking. Tackling biosphere's future needs addressing the complex nature of ecosystems.

How to find new models from a given data set? This is a major challenge with great relevance to many disciplines, from physics to complexity. Here's a very important contribution to creating a Bayesian Scientist Machine by et al.

What can be learned about evolution from the development of the embryo? comparative studies can shed light on the evolutionary events of the past (and even guide future bioengineering). See this great paper on von Baer's Law .

Our paper on chaos in a three-dimensional discrete ecological model is out and available. Always amazed by the complexity of simple mathematical models. Great to have been part of this team Lluís Alsedà, José Tomás Lázaro

Some people double down on their beliefs despite overwhelming evidence against them. The reason is related to a perception that conflicting data threatens their worldview or self-concept.

What is the price to pay if we don't get serious with climate change? Once we cross critical CO2 tipping points, our planet will move to a "Hothouse" future of 5ºC extra warming. A place where no civilization will persist. Check this paper:

Thanks for namedropping SFI (alongside & ) as one of the reasons ranks in the Top 10 US cities for ! (40 book establishments per 100K people? We might be sustaining 10 of those...)

Are cells living machines? They are dissipative structures that self-replicate & repair themselves & perform information-processing tasks. What is fundamentally different from a machine? Here's a paper exploring the problem.

If you want to explore your "effective distance" to the locations, have a look here: . Toggle between traditional map view and effective distance view and select an airport in the affected region.

“Auschwitz did not fall suddenly from the skies. It was all those tiny steps until what happened here behind me happened. This happened. Which means that it may happen again. Which means that it may happen anywhere” - Marian Turski, Holocaust survivor.

Percolation is one of the most important concepts within complex systems research. Want to have a theoretical picture of the problem? Kim Christensen's notes on "Percolation theory" are among the best to start

What is the origin of programmed cell death? How did it emerge in our ancient biosphere? Here's a great paper by Iranzo and co-workers on how virus-host arm races evolved cell suicide as an altruistic trait

In death, he was ritually mummified and sealed in a coffin with the inscription “Nesyamun, true of voice.” Now, some 3,000 years into the afterlife and with the aid of a 3-D-printed vocal tract, Nesyamun can once again be heard.
