the space=oceans metaphor is just too beautiful, makes it impossible to think straight abt this

Well, thats not exactly true. For instance, the Moon has large deposits of Deuterium, the stuff that looks most promising as a fuel source for fusion (still probably a long ways off, but thats not the point)
-
Also, in Space you can make things super cold really easily, making super conductors more viable (making big computers even faster) And there's also the possibilty of zero-g agriculture
-
To claim there's "nothing" is outright false. But it is difficult to get to, that is true.
-
'theres nothing there thats worth the immense cost of acquiring it or doing it there' is functionally the same as 'theres nothing there'
-
Large deposits of deuterium are certainly worth acquiring in the future if and when fusion is viable
-
i assume youre talking about helium 3, not deuterium, which exists at the same abundance ratio on earth, but thats still a very speculative technology and its not at all clear its even cheaper to get from the moon vs synthesizing on earth
-
Yeah its helium 3 sorry. But thats true, it is speculative. In any case a Space Force tasked with defending importang satellites is not necessarily a terrible idea imo. Our entire telecommunications networks depend on them
-
Well, if you want to wreck that forever then maybe not

Didn't Christopher Nolan throw a scene into Interstellar where a black man and a white woman basically say that NASA was useless because it didn't do enough to feed poor brown people? Dude makes Ayn Rand look subtle tbh.
