In Hong Kong crackdown, police repeatedly broke their own rules — and faced no consequences

  2. This is adorable and Taiwanese are objectively the best, but it is easier to be generous when you have a gov't that be relied upon to provide for you (see: ). The panic-buying and hoarding in HK are symptomatic of society with zero faith in their leaders.

  3. From Thursday, Taiwan will implement a face-mask distribution system to ensure adequate supplies for everyone. Using their health insurance cards, each citizen will be entitled to 2 masks a week at over 6,000 pharmacies nationwide for NT$5 each (HK$1.25).

  4. Friendly text from the Department of Health. Nice to receive one that’s not the police warning me to stay away from illegal assemblies.

  7. Thus we can situate the Wuhan bucket lion dance within a great tradition of Quarantine Art that stretches across many centuries and civilisations, and may provide one positive to the ongoing torment some 58 million people there are currently experiencing.

  8. This time period provided both enough time for any latent symptoms to manifest and enough time to make these amazing, improvised carvings on the facility’s walls, now famous in particular for the “ship graffiti” depicting in amazing detail the vessels they observed sailing past.

  9. These are photos I took last year of the graffiti on Malta‘a Manoel Island, once home to the Mediterranean’s foremost quarantine facility. Passengers and crew aboard ships from infected areas had to spend 40 days (hence “quarantine”) here before stepping foot on the main island.

  11. This is partly because illicit wildlife trade is not covered by the Organised and Serious Crimes Ordinance, which empowers police to go after the profits of organised crime and apprehend the kingpins. Instead, the organised crime and triad bureau is busy hunting down protesters.

  12. Macau has passed a law requiring all passengers aboard public transportation to wear face-masks from today to prevent the spread of , joining Guangzhou. Hong Kong’s government is still fighting a court appeal to impose a law banning face-masks.

  13. "The death rate reported by China is heavily misleading… due to the structural method of how China records deaths. This has led to jokes in the epidemiology community that 'it's impossible to die of flu in China', because they don't record any deaths where the patient has flu."

  14. Today’s strike includes only non-emergency staff, but the medical workers’ union has vowed to step up the strike to also include emergency services tomorrow if the gov’t doesn’t respond to their demands. Yesterday, Chief Executive Carrie Lam refused to even meet with Union reps.

  15. This is the scene outside Hong Kong’s Queen Mary Hospital, where medical workers are striking to demand the government close the city’s border with mainland China to contain the and provide adequate support for both hospital employees and regular HKs.

  16. 1) That is unbelievably offensive. 2) Shanghai’s borders (not China’s) were open to Jews because it was a foreign-run open port that didn’t require visas or passports (what China condemns as “semi-colonialism") and the Japanese never bowed to Nazi requests to exterminate them.

  17. This is worse than it looks. Even a normal baton strike (i.e. to the thighs/forearms) would be against regulation, as it is reserved for meeting “active aggression.” But leaked police training manuals show that a strike to the head is in fact “deadly force”—same as firearm use.

  18. The hashtag “only we can close our own border” is a variation on the protesters’「自己政府自己救」(“only we can save our own HK”). As HKers increasingly feel their gov’t is the enemy—a colonial imposition that’ll never act in their interests—the city will keep on this dark path.

  19. A message circulating on Telegram by a group claiming responsibility for the suspected bomb found at the Lo Wu border crossing today: “With the tyranny’s acquiescence you came to our city to spread this virus, but did you consider clearly whether you’d be able to go back alive?”

  20. Researchers at a Shenzhen hospital have just found survives in the excrement of the infected. This strongly suggests fecal as well as respiratory transmission is possible, making a scenario like the infamous Amoy Gardens SARS outbreak possible.

  21. Besides closing the border with the mainland, hospital workers are also demanding a plan to ensure adequate supplies of face-masks, enough isolation wards and nurses to care for quarantined patients, and a gov’t promise not to seek revenge on employees for organising the strike.
