Current @fsf situation is getting seriously ridiculous. Have y'all not read the GPL? The foundation has always been about nurturing and protecting the rights of *software*, not individuals, not communities, most definitely not minorities. Software! As an art form.

This is not my understanding of the philosophy at all. It was always positioned as ensuring rights of users of software, not the software itself. GPL was intended to ensure rights of receipients of software made available under the license.

"The licenses for most software are designed to take away _your_ freedom to share and change it. By contrast, the GNU General Public License is intended to guarantee _your_ freedom to share and change free software--to make sure the software is free for all its _users._"

[my first reply was unnecessarily snarky, so deleted and trying again] The GPL's preamble, probably the closest thing FSF will ever have to a constitutional document, is deeply focused on the freedom of the humans reading the licenses. Software is only the means to that end.

It's true that, many times, FSF/RMS confused the two, placing focus on the software's licensing and forgetting about the people; that was essentially the theme of my 2016 LibrePlanet talk: https://lu.is/blog/2016/03/23/free-as-in-my-libreplanet-2016-talk/ …

And there was also confusion about which people (users? developers?) But however you slice it, the ends—the reasons FSF existed—were about people.

Thus, what I find ridiculous is all the calls for a RMS successor to completely shift focus to community of contributors. If you want @TheASF or @linuxfoundation you know where to find them. I want @fsf to stay focus on freedom of end users and software. We desperately need both.

(
@TheASF clearly is about fostering communities. The LF, however, is about developing new markets for member companies. More, better, more collaborative#OpenSource is sometimes required for market development...)0 replies 1 retweet 2 likesThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
