I think that would be possible, sure. That fits OSI's role. Just needs volunteers...

But that was not what the OP was asserting.

Not sure who you mean by OP, but to be clear: I was asserting my surprise over lack of leadership from OSI on this. It may be the case that OSI simply no longer attracts volunteers interested in tackling these types of issues. That would be fair, albeit sad point.

the conversation has been framed with no solution: either OSI+FSF compromise on their values or these companies get bankrupted by AWS. The VCs are to blame for plowing through without engaging communities first. Take GPLv3 review process as example of a better approach

FWIW I think @adamhjk framing is *exactly* what will get us to a solution here

I hope it will. The fact that it was launched as a lone-man project doesn't seem a great start. It'll get interesting when Mongo, Confluent et. al. join it.

Which gets us full circle to the potential role for OSI in championing something like this

OSI or a well funded organization with well paid staff, one that claims to e all about open source and collaboration... which one could it be? :)

What’s that’s old canard about biting hands that feed you? When your multi, multi million budget is dependent on corps ponying up hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars, it’s kind of hard to smack ‘em on the wrists. You have to temper your moral outrage.

My question is, do we need a foundation to do this work? I certainly don’t need resources or grants, and I wouldn’t know what to do with them if I had it. My $0.02 would be to start lower fi than that, and see what comes. Can we just be an open source think tank?

I’ve got not bones to pick with foundations. OSI, FSF, Apache, and the Linux Foundation all do work I respect. But I wonder if we couldn’t build a community with them as constituents.
