I think this is more about understanding what OSI mission has become. The way it looks today is sort of like having an organization like IETF without a single representative of networking companies. Not impossible, I suppose, but super weird.

Previous elections had nominees from Debian, Document Foundation (LibreOffice), Eclipse, Mozilla, OpenMRS, OW2, Python, Wikimedia. Apache is no longer a member, so they would not be able to nominate, although a person with ties to ASF could run as an individual member.

Right. Which is why this is not necessarily critique of the process, but rather critique of the outcome. On the surface the process appears to be fine and yet it results in a board that seems to not fully represent key constituencies.
