Fascinating. Many men in Saudi Arabia support women working but think other men dont. When they learn the true beliefs of others they change behavior. HT @seema_econ @_alice_evanshttps://twitter.com/YanagizawaD/status/1011257884099870720 …

Happy to share my new paper [with Leo Bursztyn & @GlobalSociology] on social norms regarding female employment in Saudi Arabia. We document widespread misperceptions of norms; correcting them matters for behavior. It’s really great, & there are parallels with #metoo Many of us thought harassment was terrible, but didn’t realise others shared this view. So stayed quiet But when we saw an outpouring of support for victims, we overcame pluralistic ignorance -> shift in beliefs & behaviour

So what’s NOT effective: Telling people to do X, without changing their norm perceptions about whether peers support X. Publicising low support for X, or backlash against X. Cos then people are even more reluctant to do X, if they think everyone is against it. Both are common

Many Republicans in the Senate support replacing Trump but think other Republican senators don't.
