I feel like the vast majority of Americans have zero idea Illinois is one of the largest receiving states for Mexican immigrants. It blew my mind when I discovered this in my late 20s.
As a native Illinoisan, /I/ didn’t know that until college. Growing up in rural IL is vastly dif from Chicago. I can count on 2 hands the POC in my entire high school. That said, any big city here will have good tacos made by Mexican immigrants & Spanish written info everywhere.

The worst "Mexican" food I've ever had was in Indiana. I live in Indiana. Have done so for twelve years. I have seen stuff similar to this joke image. The bigger cities are, like anywhere, usually better. But the smaller towns? Folks. No.
