I picked Cagney here on purpose. I've always used him as a guide, in a strange way, maybe. Because he's scrappy and working class. There's a swathe of writers and artists who come from situations that are not hoity like the New Yorker.

and there's a real confrontation about both holding up places (as you would a saint, not as you would a bank) like the New Yorker while feeling that they can prove your bona fides...

...while having to hold back parts of yourself to be accepted or sell those same parts for their consumption. I've had professors question my way of talking. I've in turn questioned my way of writing and belonging. And how I cope to do so.
