racism is obviously uncivil, almost by definition, & I have been affected by it - at times deeply. but in order for racists to learn & become better, they need to be listened to and debated

It boggles my mind, how many people say this and then cannot see that this is a position of privilege.
-
Say which part? The civility toward racists or NOT being civil toward them?
-
Well. I’m a woman. And a minority. And I work in the arts for a living. And *any* homework on your part would have unearthed my obvious views. I’m not a sarcastic person normally, but let’s not be so lazy before we ask these questions next time.
-
I can't remember how I started following you, and I thought it was in relation to someone in the arts. But I'd rather not *assume* a context of a tweet when you could answer in five words or less, or not at all. People say uncharacteristic things all the time.
-
Agreed. I do appreciate the attempt to clarify. Clarity is critical, as is civility, I also appreciate this about you. Plus, nothing is guaranteed.

"He [Trump] has behaved as if conservatism and racism are synonymous when, in fact, they are not. Roxanne Gay NYThttps://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/29/opinion/roseanne-canceled-abc-racist-tweets.html …

If you're going to camp out in Dr. Gay's mentions and argue with her all day, you might try spelling her name correctly.
-
Nah don’t worry. Check his bio, he’s a “writer”.

Frankly I think it's high time to make hate speech an exception to 1A protection, defining "hate speech" as the advocacy of depriving a group of human beings of their rights based on their identity.
-
I've been thinking of this lately as well. Canada and France and Germany have laws limiting hate speech. I'm sick of Nazis and the KKK being able to spew what they do and people claiming it's protected.
-
It gets tricky when you look at workarounds, like advocating for restrictions by targeting the reality of identity groups. For instance, that's how sneaky voter disenfranchisement laws work. It may not be a panacea but that's not a reason to do something.

This is exactly why certain family members will not be invited to my wedding in December. When peo pe tell me I should “let it go” for “just one night,” I openly scoff at them. It’s never something to just “let go,” even for a short amount of time.
-
If it was 1861 and you were fighting for the union you wouldn’t be expected to invite your confederate relatives to the wedding so....
-
Exactly! And people assume I’m not inviting these folks because my fiancé pressured me to since he’s black. Like I would need any convincing to cut awful people out of my life. It’s ridiculous. We never even had to discuss it. It was just a given.
-
I’m lucky I don’t have close relatives who support trump, but it boggles my mind when people do the “we’re all gonna get along just for thanksgiving.” what the fuck do they talk about!? The weather is a fucking controversial topic. Anyhow, congrats on being strong!

3. There's plenty of research in social psychology to show that calling people out or shaming them does not work. It makes them defensive. Rather, what works is hearing them out. Yes it's difficult to defeat racism. If it was easy we would have already defeated it

Good post. Some of the people commenting aren’t addressing the fact that racism is the source of white supremacy. That’s the root cause. We can ignore the average everyday racist all day but that won’t make racism in and of itself less of a problem.
