I’ve been commenting about the unusual spike in methane at Barrow since last summer when I first began noting it. It has now showed up on flask and in-situ data for over 6 months. Dozens of readings spanning months well above 2000 ppb. Industrial? Oil & Gas operations? Other?

Warmest January on record and no El Niño to blame. The has been very selfish with releasing its cold air so far this winter. All this sets the stage for what could be a blistering hot Northern Hemisphere summer coming up.

Some commented that the methane spike we’ve seen in the was a fluke or bad data. Not so much.

This is worth reading and paying attention to. While there is much discussion about when and/or if we can avoid a 3C temperature rise globally, the is already exceeding that and the consequences are global.

As I’ve said before, I don’t know what “business as usual” is anymore. Is it global climate policy being held hostage by a handful of petrostates and the Murdoch media empire?

science has made a huge difference. No longer are we predicting 5 deg warming as policies have slowed carbon emissions. Next challenge is to have policies to get to net zero by 2050. Given our past geopolitical success we could do it!

There was some discussion about the effects of a large sudden stratospheric warming event (SSW) on sea ice extent (SIE) the folllwing summer. Here’s one study showing they are anti-correlated when other factors are present:

Helsinki 🇫🇮 January 2020. First time on record without any snow. First time on record every single day above 0°C. Unprecedented month on many scales.

The Fermi Paradox asks why we haven’t made contact or seen signals from advanced civilizations if they are plentiful in the Universe. One possible solution: the era of radio communication is incredibly short. Using Quantum entanglement a logical next step?

This is really a pretty conservative and easy to make prediction by the . Probably the only thing that would make a new global temperature record not happen in that timeframe would be a major volcanic eruption.

Never thought I’d see massive chunks of ice called PIGlets, but it looks like the momma in is ready to unleash a whole “drift” of them. A drift is what a group of young pigs 🐖 is called.
