After 3 months of experimenting with variety of previously unseen methods to rotate stuff in 3D I conclude that there is no convenient and intuitive way to transform 3D stuff with a 2D pointer. I am staying with traditional gizmos and locking rotation to one axis at a time.

How about scroll wheel for the vertical axis and mouse movement for the other two on the plane?

Not everyone has a wheel though. In fact I haven't used a mouse in about 10 years. I have a magic trackpad at my desk and laptop trackpad on the move.

Try using vive and tiltbrush. We do have that receptor - it's called stereroscopic vision. Hand-eye coordination is perfectly functional - you just need to serve it correctly. Flat surface only goes so far.

Have you tried 3D painting in VR? It feels absurd how quickly you're able to interpret the distance to a point in space. I wish mice had some way to sense where it's being held relative to the desk surface. Would still be hard to go the other direction.
