You're exactly right. I've found this to be true in my personal life as well. Often I have been accused of outrageous behaviour and realized only long afterwards that the person was projecting onto me their own standards of behaviour.

Because so much of right wing news is phony and so many right wing journalists are just con artists, they assume all other news outlets and journalists are the same way and think this kind of keystone cops BS would work on them.
