Other still works politically, & is probably something hardwired in us that we haven't overcome (like beware of dark caves, there be bears).

But to take responsibility for our own values and morals is scarier still -- means losing the the liturgical crutch, and is a lot more work.

However, don't think that means religion is useless;

understanding and engaging with the human element in the formation of a god can help us better understand both.
