Can someone explain what the problem is with showing ID when voting?

There's no problem. The problem arises when you make it difficult for people to obtain one via closing DMVs or rejecting college IDs.

I'm for a national federal ID like every developed country. You eliminate all these problems right away.

Also, poll taxes are illegal (24th amendment). If you are requiring an ID (or any other thing), which costs, it is a poll tax.

Should Canadians, Germans, Italians etc be able to walk up & vote without showing ID?

Voters never needed to show ID to vote until republicans started making up stories about voter fraud.
