Zwarte Piet represents a boy sent down the chimney by Sinteklaas --> blackened face, so slave/assistant, but not black-skinned.

But I agree it's a very troubling image.

No-one now would portray a Victorian child chimney sweep in black face, so why Zwarte Piet?
