    Reza Aslan Retweeted Laila Lalami

He made the comment in 2015, long before he was running for president and frankly, long before most Americans had even heard of the phrase let alone understood its connotations.https://twitter.com/LailaLalami/status/1113891851902185473 …

No doubt many white people were unaware of the way the phrase was applied. But they’re not mayor of South Bend (25% African American residents), don’t speak 7 languages, and aren’t running for president. I’d expect Buttigieg to be able to catch the nuance of the phrase. https://twitter.com/rezaaslan/status/1113880094475296768 …

I'm almost always willing to forgive politicians when they acknowledge the mistake, understand why it's hurtful, and commit to doing better. People grow.

I think the real story here is how the GOP was able to weaponize the phrase "black lives matter" by literally strawmanning it to mean *only* black lives matter, or white lives *don't*. Seemed obvious to me, but the MSM ate it up.

He'll either resonate with the black constituency (very important) or not. Saying he didn't realize how the phrase was problematic at the time will put out this fire, but there's a ton of work for him to do otherwise. I assume despite this that he's gotten their votes in SB?

I'm torn, 2015 was right on the edge that people started cluing into what BLM is saying, but the context Mayor Pete used it in was so specific it seems... odd that he wouldn't get the connection?

Uh, I can under that...I guess. But what about the crazy amounts of evictions of black residents in his city? He's gotta explain some things.

#BlackLivesMatter started gaining traction in the summer of 2013. It is just not believable that he had not heard that phrase nor understood the connotations.

🙄 honestly, you can't even accept this critique? It's disingenuous comments like this that normalize spin/deceit in today's politics. It's great if he's evolved from a previous position but stop white washing for no apparent reason

The way I see it, is this knee-jerk white person reaction pushing back against the idea that black lives matter.
