I’m not sure AVR would have a chance of passage in the Senate as a stand-alone either. An expanded electorate tends to benefit Democrats (the newly added voters will be largely POC, younger and female, plus a smaller number of rural) so Republicans have no incentive to sign on.

Make them say no. Make them vote on it and reject it. Make them reject legislation on guns, climate change, health care, immigration, infrastructure, all of it.
-
MAKE THEM SAY NO.
-
Agree. Get every one of the no votes on the record.
-
In the Trump era, what makes you think that scares them?
-
It doesn’t matter if it scares them. It’s that we use it to bring our case to the American people.

If you think an expansion of voting would sail through both houses, you clearly haven’t paid attention to the last ten years of Republican voter suppression, gerrymandering and election rigging.
-
Or paid any attention to what Mitch McConnell has been up to for his entire career.

I am extremely interested in why you think automatic voter registration would "sail through both houses"
-
McConnell never brings it to the floor.
-
This. Also — any citizens united language would be non binding. It will take a constitutional amendment to repeal.

AVR passed in MD with very few Republican votes and without the signature of the Republican governor. I am skeptical it would even be brought to the floor of the US Senate.
-
Even if any such bill is highly unlikely to move in the Senate (let alone be signed by the President), they should do as much as possible to bring a spotlight to these issues.
-
I wholeheartedly agree, but I'm disputing the notion that AVR would pass the US Senate (see tweet I'm responding to). Republicans are against AVR.
-
I understood what you were saying. My comment was that it is not a political stunt, or at least, should not be.
-
So you oppose inclusion of the provision in this bill to raise its profile because it's unlikely to pass, but you support a standalone bill, even though it's unlikely to pass, to raise its profile?
-
Not sure if you are talking to me, but I support any effort to move these issues forward, even if the likelihood of legislative success in the immediate short-term is more remote.
