I think the difference is mainline Protestantism is fairly well understood. And TM is presenting itself to its beginners as a simple concentration technique.

"Huge sums of money" is a myth. TM is strictly nonprofit. The course fee is a sliding scale based on income, so anyone can learn. Most people learn through scholarships—over 1M people learned for free past 10 years.

Always makes me think what the catholic Church would be like now if journalists and commentators went after it like they go after Scientology. I find it wild that a new "faith" will get more attacks than an old one, even though their beliefs are all that much different.
