Sure. Adherents say enough people meditating at the same time can lead to global peace but that’s not that weird, Noah. And supernatural powers just means unlocking the brain’s untapped ability, which is also not that weird. Also flying is just jumping while in lotus (google it)https://twitter.com/NoahShachtman/status/1051485148766765056 …

Reza, we never call it a cult. And we note that, for lots of people, TM is a simple relaxation technique. But TM's leaders also claim, on the record, that it can trigger these supernatural powers, including the ability to end war and steer political events.

My point is all belief systems have things that look weird from the outside (Catholics literally eat the flesh and blood of Jesus?). TM is something a lot of upper class white people do. There’s no reason to make sound nefarious. Plenty of other reasons to loath/distrust Javanka

I completely agree with that point, Reza. But read the article ... TM's dubious claims go way further, asserting their meditators lowered the crime rate in certain areas and got American to reject GMOs.

There was a story about a school that replaced detention with meditation and it did reduce violence and punishments

Believing in something that CAN'T be proven false is a religion. Believing in things that CAN be proven false is a cult. There is scientific evidence that meditation can have some positive health effects, but the wild claims of TM make it a cult.

TM is just meditation that you have to pay for.

perhaps we should just call them both weird claims. There is a wee bit of irony that whenever large groups of people get together to pray for peace, they are usually at war with another large group of people praying for peace.
