I love fintech. But if I'm honest the bio team gets to support some of the most transformational tech of our times. Excited to see what they get up to next!

California has a 35 year backlog of housing that needs to be built... 3.5 million homes needed per McKinsey and CA produced 100k units in 2019.

Wrote about why I'm excited for prime focused neobanks in this months newsletter. neobanks have mostly focused on subprime users, but the opportunity in the prime segment is as (or more) exciting 💪 More thoughts therein...

Happy 10th birthday to the iPad! The best ever product that has lots seem to think has "failed". "would that we all could “fail” like the iPad; it was an $11 billion business last fiscal year, more than double the size of the Mac."

An example: "Manhattan saw permission given to 13,000 new housing units in 1960 alone, whereas for the whole of the 1990s only 21,000 new units were approved."

Largest asset class: 1800s Farmland 1900s Factories 2000s Housing And that is not a good thing. Much has do w/ artificially high prices due (1) to limited construction (2) poorly designed subsidies or both. The Economist | Building up via

*more precisely the subsidy is a tax deduction for mortgage interest. However, as any economist will tell you a tax deduction is just a subsidy by another name.

California pays $175mm to 175,000 ppl (~$1k / each) to subsidize their ownership of a second home. Kinda crazy in a state where most ppl can't afford one home. A new bill would end that subsidy.

I ♥️ long term financial data sets predicated on new research. Here's another one published in 2018 that housing 🏠(not equities 📈) has outperformed all asset classes since 1870. (there are some nuances to and reasonable critiques of this finding)

interest rates have been falling...for 700 years ‼️ (per new data compiled by Yale researchers) This has a variety of implications for how we understand the world, not least of which is understanding wealth and inequality...

provides a lot of the statistics behind the piece. Worth perusing if you're so inclined. One dataset that sticks with me as a recent parent is the dramatic decline in child mortality, but even so 15,000 children still die every day.

Contrarian opinion: 2019 was the best year ever for humanity. Each day, for the 1st time: 325,000 ppl got electricity 200,000 got piped water 650,000 went online Still plenty to improve, but the author argues our current pessimism is paralyzing.
