Too many wannabe rockstar writers out there thinking their (often terrible) scribbles are worth more than the art they're writing about. Rather lose a couple of egocentric hacks than see talented bands unable to survive long enough to reach their potential.

As a writer, I'm more worried about the artists trying to make a career out of it. They're the important ones.

I'll always appreciate receiving advance promos of an artist's work, even if I'm not into the album. It's just an honour to get someone's hard graft sent to you to check out before it's available publicly. And it's also exciting when it's something you were really anticipating.

The same austerity is felt on this masterpiece of goth/post-punk/dark wave. In fact, the Katatonia album actually has more overt melody, albeit bleaker than a death in the family on your birthday.

Katatonia put The Cure into metal before it was popular to put The Cure into metal.

I'm stoked to see all-female doom-death bands out there, but that Konvent album folks are going mad for is fairly average. Cool guitar tone, some decent Celtic Frost primitivism, but it drags a lot and rhythmically it makes Thergothon's music feel like Ramones tracks.

I've mentioned before on here that the new Svart Crown is a beast. Picture Demigod-era Behemoth and From Mars to Sirius-era Gojira with the more contemporary black/death/post-metal sound of recent Schammasch. The full thing is uncaged this Friday.

The only indie band during the above time period that got anywhere close to harnessing Gang of Four's agit-artrock mix of groove and angularity was Bloc Party. Particularly so on their fantastic debut, Silent Alarm.

GoF's sound was pillaged over the years, mostly by fashion-over-passion indie bands during the early 2000s; led by guitarists who were unworthy to string Gill's guitar. In heavier realms, you can hear their influence on bands from Refused to At the Drive-In to Grave Pleasures.

A post-punk milestone. The funk of the rhythm section was offset by the late Andy Gill's jittering, choppy licks, which sounded like he had an electrical current attached to his nads while he recorded. The guy was a genius on guitar.

The track with Masvidal might be the coolest song I've heard this year so far. Dude does this sonorous, alien Thom Yorke vocal over some molten sludge riffs. Killer.

The epitome of innovation, Demanufacture still sounds contemporary, 25 years on since its release. Those inhumanly precise rhythmic guitar/drum syncopations and Bell's death-barks and new-wave cleans were difficult to replicate, though many tried.

Here's what's coming next week. My highlights are the new Sepultura album which musically spans the band's entire career in coherent ways, and the new Svart Crown which finally sees the French band define their sound and hone the songwriting at the same time.

There's no preview track yet, but coming in March, Juan Montoya (ex-Torche) and Evan Diprima (ex-Royal Thunder) release their first EP as Moon Destroys. Two tracks have guest vocals -- one song with Troy Sanders, one song with Paul Masvidal. The music is like a more psych Torche.

that would mean I'd never be able to play again, as my hand was pretty much dying. That turned out to be a load of bollocks and the hand was just broken, so after surgery and my own rehab last year, it's so cool to be able to play around a kit again and have no pain doing so.

That was quite a lot of fun! I had to sell my Tama Swingstar Fusion kit when I was emigrating to Australia this month ten years ago. Since then, I can count on one hand the amount of times I've got to play. Was told a year and a half ago that I had a bone disease in my hand...
