Heading to @WebSummit next week? Make sure to check out @schreier, Partner at @sequoia grill Retool CEO @dvdhsu in a Q&A session on product-market fit! 👉SaaS Monster stage, Thursday Nov 3 @ 16:05
Myths about product/market fit, and how to find it; The product/market fit is the one and only priority for early-stage startups, but the journey to finding it is arduous. There’s substantial misinformation about what it is, how to find it, and what it feels like when you have it. Join David Hsu, founder and CEO of Retool, and Bryan Schreier, partner at Sequoia, as they discuss common misconceptions about PMF, how Retool found it (including the missteps along the way), and whether there’s a formula for finding it (yes, David thinks).

As a result of the improved workflow, technical operations spent less time on escalations, and engineering was free to spend more time executing against the product roadmap—the actual business part of running a business.

Assigning contractors before Retool: 🔹Required constant attention from level two engineering support team 💸 Assigning contractors after Retool: 🔹Level one operations team can do it themselves, right inside the UI 🥷⏭️

However, as Westhill began backtracing some of the most tedious internal asks for the engineering team, they discovered the last piece—assigning contractors—was one of the most common operational challenges.

First, Westhill built an internal admin UI with Retool to streamline marketplace operations. This internal interface included a running list of insurance repair projects, their status in the project workflow, and operational capabilities—like assigning contractors 👷🛠️

In early 2022, Westhill was spending *60%* of engineering capacity on internal tooling. Operations are critical to how a three-sided marketplace runs–but costly. This technical overhead hampered their time-to-market in an increasingly competitive environment. ➡️Enter Retool...

How did Westhill, a three-sided marketplace for insurance claims and home repair, save 60,000 hours and ~millions~ of dollars in engineering time? 🧵:

“We’ve already more than doubled developer throughput without adding more resources, and we’re just getting started.” Learn more about how Akshat helped to create a culture of operational efficiency at ShareChat:

ShareChat operates with 500+ Retool apps—from content moderation to events management. “Building tools for all of our use cases would have required a much bigger engineering team. We’ve reduced our engineering expenses by 20% while still building out those critical use cases."

Now, teams can iterate and build custom tools optimized for their use cases. Ex: The ops team built the Creator Ops Management app within 9 days (10x faster than before) without dedicated eng resources. They use the app to onboard >50k users every month, 20% faster than before.

V2: The only way to scale was to enable end-teams to build their frontends with a platform and frameworks. “We needed the platform to be intuitive and easy to use. We decided to use Retool as our platform for building internal tools across the company.”

Show this thread
V1: Akshat established the Tools Team to own and build high-quality frontends—while end-teams controlled their backends. But, this model started breaking as requests for frontends piled up. The Tools Team couldn’t build frontends fast enough.

Scrappiness came with a few costs: suboptimal user experiences and a lot of time spent on maintenance. As more tools were built with different frameworks and libraries, they were difficult to maintain and update over time—leading to inefficiencies in engineering and operations.

V0: In the early days, end-teams built and maintained their own tooling. But “most of the code that was written for internal tools was about shipping things as fast as possible. [This] often means that you deprioritize the user experience,” says Akshat.
