“If you came from back home and sat in my lobby I talked to you without exception, regardless if financial contribution. People coming from back home to tell people in Congress what their issues are is one of the fundamental underpinnings of our representative democracy. “
That’s quite different than what some are implying. That’s why he calls it a hierarchy. Mulvaney saying he chose who to talk to based on whether you were a constituent first. Contributor maybe. General lobbyist dangling money never.
Last minute of Mulvaney remarks are a non-partisan appeal to get involved in advocacy. “Thank you for getting involved in the process and I don’t even know what you’re going to tell them. And you may be completely on the other end of political ideology from me but I don’t care.”
If you want to fret about what Mulvaney might do with his influence now I’d look instead about what he said about the CFPB enforcement docket.
“We’ve got about 25 active lawsuits right now, active enforcement actions and I could dismiss every single one of them without giving an explanation tomorrow. I think that’s wrong…We’re not going to do regulation by enforcement. I don’t think it’s fair.“ (Applause)
He was criticizing the way CFPB law is written-one of several examples he made- but professionally skeptical me thought he may be willing to take requests.
Mulvaney not in Congress anymore. Arguably he can help bankers more in CFPB role. It reminded me of Blago. “This thing is golden.” The docket of CFPB enforcement actions is worth something now. Like when Cali cartel makes you witness a brutal murder. WFC is what can happen.
Just a classic case of "You're nobody nobody sent" unless you're a constituent, then "We know you."
